Experts believe women are at greater risk not only of seasonal illnesses but also of serious, hard-to-cure diseases. To understand why, and what can be done about it, a few key points are worth keeping in mind.

Physiology and hormonal changes play a part

Experts say that because of their physical make-up and the hormonal changes they go through (such as menstruation, pregnancy and menopause), women face a comparatively higher risk than men of certain diseases, such as heart disease, autoimmune disorders and thyroid problems. According to gynaecologist and specialist Dr. Asha Khare, regular health check-ups, a balanced diet and an active lifestyle are the most important protection against such illnesses. Women can follow a few simple tips to put their health first and keep disease at bay.

First and foremost: regular health check-ups

After the age of 30–35 it is wise to have a full-body check-up every year. This should include blood pressure, blood sugar, a lipid profile and a mammogram (breast cancer screening). A Pap smear test for cervical cancer is also essential. Hormonal changes cause women's bones to weaken, which can raise the risk of osteoporosis. To prevent this, include milk, curd and green leafy vegetables in your diet, and get enough vitamin D from sunlight.

Lifestyle changes and exercise

Amid the day's rush, it helps for women to do something just for their health. Make sure to walk, run, do aerobics or practise yoga for at least 30 minutes every day. Yoga and pranayama are especially helpful in maintaining hormonal and mental balance.

Freedom from mental stress

Several studies show that, because of hormonal fluctuations, women fall prey to depression and anxiety sooner than men. Not getting enough sleep can have the same effect. So it is important to sleep well and to set aside some time for yourself every day.

It is also commonly seen that women are more prone to urinary tract infections (UTIs). Pay special attention to hygiene and drink as much water as you can. Beyond that, making seasonal fresh fruit and nutritious food part of your daily routine will do your health a great deal of good.
